3/2/2008 Burlingham Children Sweeten Up ExerciseEXORCISE
Burlingham Children is the brainchild/passion project of Fort Wilson Riot front duo Amy Hager and Jacob Mullis. For their set at the 5th ExerciseEXORCISE series of performance evenings, they gave themselves the task of creating an entirely new song cycle to perform. The result was The Well of Weird, a 6-song show involving costumes, a prop well, and lush, evocative song-smithing.

Mullis and Hager looped beats, audio clips and other samples through their iPods and keyboards to layer on top of their own gorgeous voices and sharp guitars. The songs spoke to longing and desire, with pointed anger and criticism (think Bob Dylan’s“Masters of War”). The “Weird” of the title also draws from “Wyrd,” as in the witches from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and the overall effect was ethereal and immediate; an other-worldly presence to close out what had already been a powerful evening of acts.

The “Best Of” ExerciseEXORCISE is this Friday, at the Bottling House Theatre, 79 13th Ave NE, #212 (Just north of Broadway and Marshall). Doors at 9:30, show at 10.
