1/28/2009 Skol pa fisken! Hail to the Fish!
This week’s Photo of the Week is of Kari Tauring, Volva kona (which she says means staff carrier in Old Norse) on opening day of the Art Shanty Project on Medicine Lake where Kari was on hand to kick off the project with a ritual blessing. Kari is seen here with Karin Odell in front of the Sauna Shanty, where photographer Jenn Barnett took this photo on an exceedingly cold Saturday afternoon.

"In this picture," Kari told me, “I am "lokking" (calling and singing) the spirits of the directions in Old Norse (similar to Icelandic) and the spirit of the Dakota warrior who disappeared in the lake (giving it the Medicine of its name) while the crowd cheers ‘Skol pa fisken! Hail to the fish!'”

While in the Sauna Shanty, Karin and Kari treated the steamers to two women's sauna songs, one in Votic and one in Latvian. Then Kari read runes for everyone in the sauna before heading on her sleigh to the next shanty for more ritual. Kari spent the day blessing each shanty and reading runes for the householders and visitors.
