5/14/2006 J. Matt Keil of Kubla Khan at the Kitty Cat Klub

Summery and sweet Kubla Khan opened for Alva Star last Saturday night at the Kitty Cat Klub. I came for Alva Star, but left pleasantly surprised by the Kubla Khan boys, whose music has been just under my radar for the past few years. (In)famous dancer extraordinaire, Rupert from The Hopefuls (known by his Clark-Kent name, Matt, in Kubla Khan) proved he was just as thrilling to watch behind a drum set as he is bouncing in front of it. There's an element of days-gone-by pop nostalgia in their songs, and I can't help but grin like a fool when I listen. Kubla Khan plays next at the Varsity this Sunday, May 21st, with Chris Koza and Wisely.
