9/24/2006 The World's Most Dangerous Polka Band at Nye's

Local photographer Dan Schultz captured this shot of the World's Most Dangerous Polka Band earlier this month at Nye's. According to their website, the Polka Band started back in 1975 with original member and accordian player Ruth Adams leading the group. Pictured is drummer Ollie Manley, who just joined the band this year.

Nye's Polonaise was listed as "Best Bar in America" in this month's Esquire, as part of a monthly feature of bands around the nation. The piece features interviews with staff members and regulars, and though it may seem like an odd choice for best bar the article makes some convincing arguments, including this one:

"Minneapolis is a city built on its institutions—the falls at Minnehaha, the Institute of Arts, Kirby Puckett, and Fran Tarkenton—but the best and sturdiest of them hang out here, wrapped in the darkness and surroundings that have remained perfectly preserved since the 1960s.

"The walls are paneled, the tables are Formica, and there are people who have worked at Nye's for forty years. Their stories are each the same: One otherwise unexceptional day, they ducked in from the street, waited for their eyes to adjust, and never found reason to head back out into the sun."
