10/7/2007 Girl Talk Overruns First Avenue
Friday night, the First Avenue Mainroom turned into what can only be described as a sweatbox. Well over a thousand people jiggled, shook, and boogied their way around the dance floor. This melee of bodies was a direct reaction to the work of master mash-up artist Girl Talk, aka Philadelphia native Gregg Gillis. I haven’t sweat so much in my life, and I'm sure I'm not alone there. The entire floor moved as one body, like a throbbing heart - thrashing and swaying to the beats pumped out by Gillis' laptop. Those familiar with his work know that he likes to surround himself with his audience, this show being no exception. Local photographer Brian Grenz caught this shot of people crammed around Gillis on the stage. The crowd on the floor clambered to get closer, only to be rebuffed by security who were keeping a tight limit on the bodies flailing about on the stage.
