The One for the Team CD Release show at the 7th Street Entry was the perfect setting to see a trio of local bands on a late Friday night. The line up included One for the Team, We All Have Hooks for Hands (both signed to local Minneapolis label, Afternoon Records) and Themes, a band that I had never heard of before.

One of the main reasons I love going to shows at the Entry is you may not even know you’re standing right next to band members from the groups you are coming to see: it’s small and intimate.

When We All Have Hooks for Hands stepped out on the small stage, there wasn’t enough room for the nine band members and all their equipment (including guitars, drums, trumpets and a violin.) I was looking forward to hearing what kind of sound a band of that size and with so many instruments would produce. Unfortunately, I soon lost my excitement when I heard the lead singer begin to sing. Let’s just say, I was glad to have all the instruments to drown out his voice, as it was very screechy and almost painful to listen to.

Themes were up next and were a nice change of pace from the fast and crazy songs that were just played. Theme’s lead singer had a rich, beautiful soothing voice and as I was listening, I couldn’t help but thinking that they could be playing at a coffee shop, a poetry reading or at a protest, and not seem out of place. Simply put, their music is a perfect mix of darkness and beauty.

To close the night out, One for the Team went on at midnight. Since buying the record Build It Up a few weeks ago on iTunes, I have not been able to stop listening to it. I was addicted to the sunny, catchy and cutesy songs that lead singers Grace Fiddler and Ian Anderson were so good at creating. Their set list included some of my favorite tracks from their new record, such as “Best Supporting Actor,” “A Better Job” and “Hey Kid.”

One for the Team is a fun band that once you start listening to; you will not be able to stop singing, dancing or smiling to.

I like One for the Team for the following five reasons:

1.     Their songs make me smile.

2.     Their music makes me want to dance (and not care who is watching.)

3.     Their songs are catchy.

4.     The lead singers Grace Fiddler and Ian Anderson are dating. I’m a sucker for band romances.

5.     On their title track, “Build It Up,” Fiddler sounds a lot like Tegan and Sara, my all time favorite band.
