Upon entering the Entry, I woefully realized that we had missed the first opener, Wallace Wylie, and moments after we stepped into the strangely quiet club, Martin Devaney was already on stage tuning up. A song into his set, he explained that his band mate Jake Hyer was running late, but Devaney, as usual, managed to make do and take that simple acoustic guitar and harmonica and sound simply perfect. So of course it was a treat once Hyer finally did make it, quickly setting up his instruments, like his fiddle and a fancy electric mandolin that looked like an adorably tiny guitar. And as Devaney finished his set, and as I stood at the back of the club and basically reveled in the glory of that set, in walked Amy Rigby and Wreckless Eric behind me and my weirdo, music-head fandom kicked in full blast as I texted HWTS kingpin David de Young—“They’re at the bar!”
Cue the waiting, of course, but they unassumingly took the stage, their mic stands purposely close together. As the night progressed we saw a fine balance of their solo work and flashes of light in the form of new tracks from their collaboration since they fell in love and ran off to France to get married. And in their still-newlywed bliss, they rocked out in the Entry. And while it still might have been under attended, it was still a perfect show that everyone just didn’t want to end. From Amy Rigby’s killer version of her amazing song, “Rasputin,” which left me fully revved up and ready to take on the world, to Eric’s “Reconnez Cherie,” with the fully invested crowd completely into it.
