I think that every true third-wave feminist needs to see Ani DiFranco at least once. One must see her if not for the music, for the pure symbolism. Row after row of strong and confident women sang along to the endless of stream of DiFranco's powerful acoustic anthems. DiFranco has influenced millions with her musical poetry; and it seems as though she has no intention of slowing down any time soon. I may not have been the most dedicated fan in the sold-out State Theatre, but my appreciation for this legendary woman made the show a worthwhile experience without a doubt.

Alternating between taking the stage solo and playing with a three-piece band, DiFranco’s story-filled songs shined a bit brighter when she was accompanied by the drums, up-right bass and xylophone. As much as people enjoy hearing her majestic finger picking, her acoustic style can get a little mundane without backing—words sounding more like rants than stories. The full sound offered intimate substance while never overwhelming her folk-style storytelling.

With 20 years of material, DiFranco varied her set by playing songs from each of her albums, while still hitting some of her latest songs off “Red Letter Year.” In between numbers, her enthusiasm bubbled over into politics. She specifically targeted McCain’s unfortunate choice of running mate and then DiFranco recalled her own experience as a lobbyist in her earlier years fighting against toxic waste dumps. As a new mother, DiFranco also dedicated an ode to all of the moms in the audience.

Still full of undeniable commitment and incredible passion for what she does, the crowd cooed and drooled over every song, most notably “As Is,” “Both Hands” and “You Had Time.” The last couple of songs enticed everyone to stand up, creating an "Ani-dance- party" under the stage. In her little cargo pants and plain black T-shirt, DiFranco smiled wide and fluttered around her band mates until the lights went low and tears were wiped from adoring eyes.
