Girl Talk at First Avenue on 11/3/08

Toilet paper streaming from the rafters and sweat trickling down the faces of everyone in the room, Girl Talk was as awesome as one would suspect. A continuous mash-up of songs most hipsters wouldn’t dare admit knowing; lips mouthed every word as they shook and jumped to the continuous party jams. The stage was stormed with the usual attention whores, making sure to get as close to the man with the laptop as possible. Greg Gillis, a.k.a. Girl Talk, was soaked in his basketball attire, which slowly disappeared into the crowd as he removed it.

Beach balls bounced over the almost too trendy crowd, as well as gigantic blown up plastic bags. Gillis commented the venue was “165 degrees hotter” than his show last year, and I don’t think anyone would’ve disagreed. Regardless of temperature, shoulders and hips grooved and cheered; a dance party with all eyes on the master that is Girl Talk.

While thinking about how to write this review, I came to one conclusion: I needed to make a list. Just like his songs, randomness overran the evening’s performance and therefore it seems extremely difficult for me to arrange such blurbs of wild happenings in comprehensive paragraph form. So here are nine details of what went down:

  1. A drunk girl used Gillis’ shoes as drum sticks and managed to kill the power to his laptop and speakers, causing 10 seconds of awkward silence, followed by boos.

  2. Two Girl Talk helpers, one in a scary mask and the other a slutty cop, used leaf blowers to shoot TP and confetti into the crowd, and occasionally cool off the security guards.
  3. One man wore a pastel green bodysuit and facemask, shaking his barely covered junk at everyone. Another guy wore a horse-head mask, no shirt and tan spandex pants. Very funny to see grinding on stage.
  4. A security guard’s head was bleeding after helping people on stage. Claws!
  5. Boys clothing continued to come off as the night went on.
  6. Gillis played Jackson 5, M.I.A., and “Whoop There It Is,” but layered them under and over songs like Sinead O’Conner’s“Nothing Compares”, Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You’ve Been Gone.”
  7. Some particularly awesome combos were Weezer with Lil’ Wayne, “No Diggity” and Kanye West.
  8. My personal favorites mixes: Yael Naim and with “My Neck My Back” lyrics “Pop Your Pussy” and “Jessie’s Girl” with the lyrics “I’d rather get some head,” by Three 6 Mafia.
  9. Gillis ended the evening by removing his sweat soaked socks, the second to last clothing item left on his body….now that’s a party.
