I arrived a little late at the 400 Bar Thursday night, but at least I arrived, which was more than a lot of people did. The band room was practically empty at 11:30 p.m. save for a handful of fans and Mike Brady, whose band First Prize Killers had just finished up before I arrived.

On stage were Lacrosse, Wisconsin's Shot to Hell, headed up by Aaron Monte. Shot to Hell is a band I'd probably been scared away from by their name for a while, though they've been playing the Twin Cities scene for some time. I'm glad I got over my appelation anxiety because this is a great edgy 3 piece, Uncle Tupelo meets Neil Young meets Slobberbone rock and roll band. I walked in during "Brighter Future," a political diatribe featuring the great line "Sometimes I sit and contemplate what's become of our great land / when they're spending 14 billion on new ways to kill a man." The song is not as pretentious as it might sound by that line; it's actually surprisingly fun, and a song I wish I could slip unwittingly into George W.'s CD player.

"Brighter Future," and the next song, a rockabilly punk sort of number called "Are You Going to Heaven" appear on their 2000 release "This Band Right Here is Called...." It's an excellent CD that's a very versatile listen. I'm sure it will continue to find its way back into my CD player as the months go by.

Shot to Hell has a number of shows in the midwest coming up this summer, including one at the Terminal Bar on June 27th. I'll be on a plane to Denmark for Roskilde at that time, but trust me on this one, this is a band I really think you will enjoy, especially if you enjoy music that does the spirit of Jason and the Scorchers proud. If they play this well to a nearly empty bar, I can't wait to see the magic that's likely to happen when this band takes the stage in front of a good sized crowd.
