Doomtree Blowout 3 at First Avenue on 12/14/07

I made a small mistake and didn't show up to the Doomtree show until 11:00, thinking I could easily skip the slew of openers in exchange for a hot date.  Turns out, I missed all of the individual short performances. No worries though. I caught the most important part—Doomtree, all members, together for the big hoorah.

The Mainroom was pretty full and more than jazzed to finally get the show off and running. The Doomtree logo hung from the ceiling, teeth glowing amidst dirty metal wings. It felt similar to a family reunion, like going home for the holidays and seeing all your favorite cousins surrounding the chip dip. P.O.S., Dessa, Mike Mictlan, Cecil Otter, Sims and Paper Tiger let the crowd know what was up with their first beat, urging everyone to grunt "where you at" along with the crew.

Each person extremely talented in different areas, Doomtree came together and delivered a good show, hitting tracks new and old (with a heavy emphasis on the old) and a few spotlight songs for individual members. I've seen these kids more times than I've seen my own landlord, and therefore I wasn't surprised at what went down. Cecil maintained his awkward paperboy act. Dessa's mic was too low. P.O.S. stole the spotlight, regardless if he was rapping or standing in the shadows. Paper Tiger wore great shades. Sims seemed like he hadn't been around in awhile. And Mictlan had enough energy to run my washing machine in heavy mode.

High points during the show seemed to occur whenever P.O.S., Sims and Mictlan took the runway as a trio, punching the sky, hollering and just giving in to the music's needs. The energy also lifted when the group brought special guests into the scene, including Toki Wright, who tore it up like mad. The crowd especially enjoyed any song that included Dessa, (even though we're all begging for some new material). I was happy to see the boys add her in for a couple new tracks, including a somewhat strange love song between her and Mictlan.

The show ended with the Doomtree anthem, all hands up, lots of jumping around, including leaps on the stage from Dessa and P.O.S.—it was about time somebody broke a sweat!

In total, good show yes, but was still left with a sustainable hunger for more as I left Downtown. But no worries-- I settled my stomach with a dirty martini and a few extra olives.
