Every time I begin to think that the Twins Cities’ folk scene can’t possibly get any better, I am spun on my head by another act I have never seen. In Friday’s case it was Lucy Michelle and her band, a group I hadn’t paid a great deal of attention to in the past. After visiting the 400 Bar to catch what turned out to be a pretty lackluster set from a different band, I luckily made the decision to stick around to see Michelle before calling it a night.

I was completely blown away.

Michelle’s blues and jazz tinged folk songs sound exponentially better live than the recordings on her MySpace page, thanks to the addition of her five-piece band. The members of the group are all multi-talented musicians and rotate their instruments like musical chairs. Eamonn McLain was particularly skilled on the cello, and looks to be classically trained. Ashley Boman was quite good on the accordion as well, adding a touch of Bal-Musette style to otherwise rootsy American music. The centerpiece of the band is, of course, Michelle herself, who plays the ukulele and can whistle to beat the band.

While Michelle had some terrific original songs, I enjoyed the covers most of all, including one of my favorite Dylan songs, “Don’t Think Twice, Its Alright” as well as “Red River Valley,” a song who’s origins are somewhat obscure. Michelle’s voice brought a touch of sweetness to each melody, reminding me a great deal of Jolie Holland’s exquisite low warble. Her vocal style has roots in American folk, but isn’t afraid to explore sultry diva territory—exposing the influence of singers like Billie Holliday or Etta James

Michelle’s fans, who seemed to fill the bar from out of nowhere as soon as the band began to play, were all as enamored with the set as I was. When Michelle announced her last song the crowd cried for, no demanded, an encore. The band was happy to oblige, and I can’t help but think they must have been very pleased with their reception.

I am looking forward to seeing Lucy Michelle again soon. While she currently has no upcoming shows listed, keep an eye on her MySpace page to see where and when they will be playing next. With so many talented folk musicians in our clubs these days, doubtlessly she will be part of some all-star lineup somewhere soon.
