As a single lady on Valentine's Day, I had two options; and I’d be damned if wallowing in self-pity was going to be how I spent this holiday about love and connection. So, planting myself up front at the sold-out How Fucking Romantic and surrounding myself with friends and great music seemed like the joyous way to celebrate.
The Turf Club was packed, both on and offstage, as The Como Avenue Jug Band hosted a night of local musicians performing their interpretations of The Magnetic Fields album, 69 Love Songs, in order from beginning to end. As I danced around and had to continuously untangle my camera from my festive red plastic beads, fans cheered and drank; bands (which included members of Coach Said Not To, Roe Family Singers, Roap Trick, The Chris Koza band, Birmingham Children, Faux Jean, Big Trouble and more) blended together as musicians guest-starred throughout the entire night, raising their glasses and rocking out on everything from a ceramic jug to a paint-adorned guitar.
I left the venue at 12:30am when the party was still in full force, but after my night at the Turf, the candlelight and couples staring into each others eyes made even this cynic sing out about love.
