It’s inevitable. Sometimes artists just aren’t going to play your favorite songs at a show. It’s hard to accept the fact they are not solely playing for your individual entertainment, but one does come to terms with the situation once the overall show is evaluated as a success. Completely excited to be swooned by the voice of Holly Miranda, lead vocals of The Jealous Girlfriends, I was sure that regardless of set list, I would not be disappointed— that is, if they played one particular song: “Lay Around.”
I was crushed, devastated even, to the point where I called out after them as they packed up and walked off stage, “’Lay around!’ What about ‘Lay Around?’” I pleaded with my PBR in the air. There was no response.
The Jealous Girlfriends did not play a bad show by any means, but the difference from their live performance to their recorded sound is too great and therefore confusing to a fan like myself. Light and lacey indie-rock, the limited number of songs I have purchased are perfect mood setters for make-out sessions, late night journaling and break-up sobbing. On stage, they rocked out, brash and semi-sloppy, producing a sound I wouldn’t have been able to pin point as theirs.
Josh Abbott on guitar was spontaneously wild, jumping up and around, dancing in a jolt-like fashion, his mop of golden curls sifting through the sound. Miranda was pretty stable, wearing an adorable blue flannel and hummingbird necklace, standing on tip toes whenever she sang solo.
I did enjoy hearing the song, “Roboxulla,” which didn’t sound near as sweet in person, but there was at least a hint of The Jealous Girlfriends I know and crave.
