Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles at 400 Bar on 5/25/08

"It's freezing up here," Langhorne Slim said from the stage of the sweltering 400 Bar on Sunday night. Through quasi-gritted smiles and seriously sweaty brows, the audience laughed. Though the air was thick and heavy, Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles (upright bassist Paul Defiglia and drummer Malachi DeLorenzo) tore through their two hour set with vibrancy, giving the most polished and passionate show of theirs I’ve seen (it was my third) and one of the best shows I've seen in the past couple of months by any performer. Langhorne ran around the stage, bouncing endlessly from one War Eagle to the other with only one small fan for a futile attempt at circulation.

Though my body felt like crumpling over and napping in a kiddie pool full of ice, the energy was still so palpable in the club it quickly became clear that I owed it to that man and his band to dance my ass off.

Aside from one small break to pour a bottle of water over his head (after which he gingerly placed his signature cap back on his head), and another small break to run downstairs, emerging from the greenroom still very sweaty followed by now shirtless band mates, Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles just didn't stop. Songs from his past album, EPs and his newest self-ttled release came to life, lyrics rich with both child-like joy and adult loneliness.

Standing up against the stage surrounded by other hardcore fans, I found myself running around in circles of excitement whenever he ripped into songs like "Restless", "Colette" or "We Love the Animals" enthusiastically singing along to every one, even when I didn't know the words. Ultimately, when Langhorne smiled and asked "What do people do in the dead of summer here? Die?" I knew even if it had been hotter I still would have found it n myself to beat the heat and move. Based on the constant cheers of encouragement, the packed 400 Bar agreed.
