After their live performance Wednesday night, it’s incredibly obvious why The Go! Team incorporates such bold punctuation in their name—they are wickedly fun!!! (Take note of the triple exclamation). Loud and jumpy, happy and busy, the British dance band kept things alive during their 14-song set, setting the bar nearly unreachable for headliner CSS.
Combining hip-hop vocals, ‘70s jams, horns, heavy percussion and cutesy chants, The Go! Team is comparable to a caffeinated, modern version of The Jackson 5. The band played music from both of their albums, pleasing all sorts of fans on the somewhat spacious dance floor. During song three, the crowd shouted “Let’s Go” and a gentle mosh pit spurted in front, also adding a lone crowd surfer.
A couple more songs in and the six piece band switched it up— literally, exchanging instruments and spots on the stage. All extremely talented, the best configuration was undeniably Ninja front and center. In tall socks and an American Apparel skirt, Ninja’s long black fro floated around her as she twisted and shook to the beat. Amazing facial expressions and sexy moves, Ninja totally rocked the show, even adding in scissor kicks.
“Ladyflash,” any Go! Team fan’s favorite song, was incredible like the rest. At times I had to wonder where all the extra horn and chanting sounds were coming from, as no one in the band looked to be playing them from any sort of machine. There was a flutaphone appearance, as well as a harmonica and a star shaped tambourine.
A show with lots of energy!!!, and tons of jumping, it was a perfect addition to my summer and inspiration to hear bands like them whenever the clouds circle overhead.
