Jay Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots at Lee's Liquor Lounge on 12/1/04

By: Karla Ludzack

With a rare solo appearance in the Twin Cities, Jay Munly of Slim Cessna's Auto Club was a show not to be missed. Munly is touring with The Lee Lewis Harlots in support of his latest solo effort, Munly & The Lee Lewis Harlots. The band consists of two female violinists, who also provide backing vocals; a cellist; an upright bass player; a drummer; and Munly, mostly playing acoustic. The vibe of Munly show is a little different than ...

Ike Reilly with Friends Like These and The Lift at Triple Rock Social Club on 11/24/04

It’s the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, so what is everybody out to do? Drink. And what goes better with drinking than an Ike Reilly show at the Triple Rock? Nothing, apparently, since arriving shortly after door time, I find a line down the block. After a little time spent soaking in the beginning of Minnesota winter, we’re in, and man is it dark. Plus, holy cow, there’s a crapload of gear on the stage. Joining us first this evening is The Lift, from L...

Matt Docter performs with the Lift on Thanksgiving Day at the Cabooze - Photo by David de Young At first, all I could see over the sold-out crowd’s heads was a giant video screen filled with surreal time-lapse images of flower growth and decay. I was further drawn in by a clear and joyful vocal, bringing back me...

H.I.M. with Monster Magnet and Auf Der Mar at The Quest Club on 11/21/04

In what she deemed “an evening of romantic rock” Melissa Auf der Maur opened the show for Monster Magnet and H.I.M. on Sunday night at the Quest. You remember her. She’s the red-headed bass player from Hole. I think the coolest thing about her is the fact that she survived Courtney Love. But I think the jury should perhaps consider the murder of MAdM’s career when sentencing Ms. Love. I didn’t expect much from Melissa Auf der Maur and her band, Au...

GWAR with Dying Fetus and All That Remains at First Avenue on 11/19/04

GWAR is An acronym for God, What an Awful Racket Dave Polaschek of Dave’s Picks remarked earlier today how he was looking forward to seeing some of the local color reporters calling in a story from a GWAR show. The local media definitely was out in force at the newly re-opened First Avenue tonight. News...

Muse at Islington Academy, London September 2003. Photo by Andrew Future, copyright Virtual Festivals Muse’s show w/ The Zutons at the Quest was one of the shows moved from First Avenue during its temporary closing, so I can only imagine how this show would have been at that venue (or in the...

Luna with Palomar at Fine Line Music Café on 11/14/04

Luna - Photo by Brian Marx (click for full size) I hadn't been to the Fine Line since the Pixies played there in April and I was curious to see what was left of it. Of course it's looking great and I was happy to find that there were no tables on the floor, just some along the edges of the balcony upstairs. W...

Britta Phillips of Luna performs at the Abbey Pub, Chicago, Illinois - Photo by Brian Marx (click for full size) Ideally you shouldn’t pay more than $15 for a full-length CD. If you do, you are either comfortably rich, mentally challenged, or desperately in love with a band. When I paid $16.99 for Luna Live (2001) a few year...

Pixies w/the Datsuns at Roy Wilkins Auditorium on 11/11/04

The Drive 105 kickoff party at Station 4 would have been a good place to go if you were ticket-less prior to show time. The alternative rock station gave away 20 free tickets to maybe only 3 dozen people who entered the drawing, so your chances were pretty good. Unlike the Fine Line show in April for which people were selling their first born just to sniff a real ticket, people were outside Roy Wilkins even after the opening...

Robyn Hitchcock at Schuba's on 11/6/04

Robyn Hitchcock - Photo from his website Am I crazy? Don’t answer that. After seeing Robyn Hitchcock’s two Minneapolis club shows (The Cedar and the Kitty Kat Club), I headed to Chicago Saturday to see him again at Schuba’s Tavern (3159 N. Southport.) Actually, it was all a happy coincidence as I already plann...
