The Swell Season (Glen Hansard of The Frames and and Czech pianist and vocalist Marketa Irglova) put on a memorable show at First Avenue in Minneapolis Sunday night July 25th. Photographer Pamela Diedrich was there and contributed this shot. First Avenue, Diedrich says, was a more intimate venue than the Orpheum Theater where the duo played when they were in town in May of 2008, and it suited them well. Diedrich also said Hansard’s story telling was more limited than during previous times she’s seen them. “Okay,†she said, “He had a couple stories about a guy he met at Keirans and another about how his first movie rental was Purple Rain.â€
The Swell Season played selections from Strict Joy and the Once soundtrack. Encores included a solo number by Hansard and a new song from Irglova.
